They’ve made
it fashionable for students to sleep during the day and study at night. What
is baffling is why intelligent students consider it wise to go against
nature. Barring nocturnal creatures like owls, the entire bird and
animal kingdom sleeps at night. Why not human beings? This night disease
doesn’t apply to our cricketers or other sportsmen. Rahul Dravid and company
head for the nets first thing in the morning. India’s top athletes also
exercise in the morning and evening and go to sleep early to conserve their
strength.
Vaastu is all about time, place, and
activity. Meaning that you do particular things at a particular time at a
particular place. You eat at a dining-table, you entertain in a living-room,
or you play in a stadium or tennis court. And you do all this at a proper
time. You don’t eat dinner at 4 a.m. or have lunch at 6 p.m. Vaastu, in
fact, sees an entire life-span in a day. It equates morning with our
childhood, day with our adulthood, evening with middle age, and night with
death. Vaastu considers waking up every morning as a daily re-birth and
going to sleep at night as a daily death.
When we stay awake at night, our minds
become prey to all kinds of devilish thoughts. Many husbands and wives
quarrel while returning from a late-night party, with the wife accusing the
husbands of flirting with an attractive female guest. I may be wrong but I
think more crimes are committed at night than during the day. This has to be
true because if you look around in Delhi, homes keep a night-guard, not a
guard during the day. In fact, patrolling
Policemen make it a point to. Question
a person if he’s walking down a street at 3 a.m. In their view, he couldn’t
be up to any good.
The nightlife culture that’s taken over
Indian cities should keep one thing in mind. See passengers taking a bus or
even plane journey at night. They look terribly demoralized. Naturally. They
yearn to be at home, asleep, reading, or watching TV with the family. Night
is equated with darkness. In movies, the executioner always wears black.
Black suits and black dresses are fashionable among western men and women.
But not among traditional Indians who think that black clothes are
inauspicious.
