Men are dominating in general life. This may be truth of almost all part of world. They are bread winner of the family and feel that they can control almost everything. Women are not supposed to challenge their domination. 

The most common cause why women put up with abuse is probably role modeling in that they may have grown up in family where their mom or elder sister are used to such behavior. Their mind can get conditioned by seeing all there happening in front of their eyes.  

Such tolerance also has a lot to do with social pressure. A society is prevalent in many part of world where they do not women stand up for their cause. Such kind of women are seen with down rated respect.  

But even then some women revolt and walked out of abusive relationship. These women are changing the world around themselves other women see them as role model and also trying to stand up against all odds.

But there are many cases where women are abuser. It is not always men abusing and controlling women, but some women abuse and control women. Not necessarily physically but mentally. It works both way. If men is not that much dominating women try to dominate her partner. So it is not a gender based phenomena, but it is a dysfunctional relationship dynamic. 

No victim of abuse likes being controlled. The abuser works on the weakening of the defense system of victim, by isolating from victims friends and family. Abusers also try to induce low self esteem into victim. There are very potent. Way to keep a victim down and powerless. 

So for some outsider it may be very unusual why the victim is putting up against all there abusive and disintegrated relationship. But for the victim, perfective is last and it is very hard to find.
