The blood loss happens as an enzyme called plasmin contained in the endometrium tends to inhibit the blood from clotting. Because of this blood loss the requirement of iron is somewhat more in a woman than a man. In menstruation many women experience the uterine cramps. A woman’s first menstruation is termed menarche, and is one of the later stages of puberty in girls. The average starting age of menstruation in the humans is 12 years. 8 to 15 years is the also comes under the normal range, where heredity, diet and overall health can advance and delay the menarche. The average age of end of menstruation in a woman is 52 years. This is called as the menopause. The menopause may occur early in the life also because of some ailments and medication followed. However, the general end of menstruation cycle is induced by the genetics of the human body. Menstrual cycle is counted from the beginning of the bleeding from the first day. The start of the menstruation is corresponding to the hormonal cycle. The menstrual cycle can be broadly divided into several phases, and the length of each phase varies from woman to woman and cycle to cycle. The phases and average values are: Menstrual phase from 1-4 days, follicular phase from 5-12 days, ovulation phase from 13-15 days, luteal phase also known as secretory phase from 16-25 days and ischemic phase from 26-29 days. In menstruation during the follicular phase the uterus thickens on stimulation by estrogen hormone. Follicles in the ovary begin developing under the influence of a complex interplay of hormones, and after several days one or occasionally tow follicles become dominant. The dominant follicle releases an ovum or egg. This process is ovulation. An egg is fertilized by a spermatozoon which will become an embryo, which ultimately sets in the uterus. If the egg is not fertilized within about a day of ovulation, it will die and absorb by body. The remains of dominant follicle in the ovary becomes corpus luteum after ovulation, produces large amount of progesterone. Under the influence of progesterone, the uterine lining changes to prepare for potential implantation of an embryo to establish pregnancy. Otherwise, corpus luteum die and causing sharp drops in levels of both progesterone and estrogen. These hormone drops cause the uterus to shed its lining in a process called menstruation.
