Mobile Dating? Another Dating Option in Our High Tech World

Some of us either haven’t caught up with online dating yet or are just getting the hang of it, but now we need to learn the ins and outs of an even newer rage – mobile dating. Online dating revolutionized dating by using the Internet to bring people together from around the world, providing an online place to meet around the clock and get to know one another. The next step, speed dating, brought people back to meeting people in a more intimate atmosphere and the opportunity to meet lots of others they knew were from their local area relatively quickly.

Some people are hesitant to use mobile dating because they aren’t as familiar with how the many features of their mobile phone or PDA as they are with their home computer or laptop. But this shouldn’t stop you, because there are several advantages to mobile dating that make taking the time to learn the technology of mobile use worth the effort. In countries like Japan, mobile dating has spread like wildfire, with huge jumps in subscriptions to service providers by young singles.

Camera phones and PDA’s with video capabilities promise to fuel the rise in mobile dating as well. A few of the larger online dating service companies in the U.S. have already begun providing mobile dating features, and many more are gearing up to provide it in the near future. Since more and more people rely on their cell phones and mobile devices as their primary form of communication, it makes sense to provide a dating service function through it – after all, you have it with you all the time, so it’s easy to quickly check incoming text messages whenever you want, wherever you are.

Most mobile dating services allow you to find matches within your area by searching by zip code. This way, you can be sure you’re texting others who are within a reasonable “dating range.” It’s a great way to meet others in your area. It’s also a great way to meet people if you’re traveling or relocating.

The learning curve is surprisingly small – text messaging is not much different than using your keyboard, except for the shorthand most savvy "messagers" use. You can learn these “shortcut” phrases by printing out a text message dictionary from the Internet and keeping it handy until you get the hang of it.

Other than that, it’s much like online dating – you post your profile and photo, then the mobile dating service matches you up with some people. You’ll get some text messages of matches, and you’re ready to get started! Wait to receive some messages or send a few of your own – it’s all up to you.

Do keep in mind that the subscriptions for these are a bit pricey, though. If you plan on using it a lot, pay for a premium subscription up front, because the overage rates can be high if you go over your limit. But after all, what’s the price for true love, whether it’s in a restaurant, at a bar or mobile dating?
